I had missed that writeup, but had seen a few others referring to Red Hat for IBM internal use. However, I am never sure how accurate/dated that information is. Novell SUSE seems to have a lot of new interest with IBM for awhile now, although I try not to equate 'new interest' with 'more interest than Red Hat'. It would be more solid for a Joe Blow like me to read these stats from IBM.com.
BTW, I'd love to use RHEL Desktop. I've tried, but my experiences showed its just way too behind-the-times for smaller companies with such varied hardware to support; Especially laptops.
I hadn't thought to check with LSB regarding that body's choice for packages. That's a very good point, and although I believe in choice I also believe that some things are going to have to become more the same between the Linux distros for them to have continued success in some areas. Now I need to research where Ubuntu stands with regards to that LSB recommendation, and see if there's anything I can do to help. Anyway, I'm grateful that someone finally shed some light on this for me.
The Notes tar.gz I was referring to is the one that contains the InstallSheild installer. My basic point is that they are different. If RPM is the standard, then why use InstallSheild for Notes? Although I'm not sure what InstallSheild uses under the covers, so maybe they are more the same that it appears?
Your offer to share fixes and workarounds is very thoughtful. I'm no Linux guru, just someone who is trying to make choice a possibility for others. Thank you!
